         2008-2009 Roster of Chapter Officers

At our last board meeting, we approved a new policy to assist those impacted by the current economic situation.  If you are currently unemployed and seeking a career in an environmental field, the GFL Chapter of A&WMA will waive the cost of local membership (a $25 value) and cover the cost of your attendance at our monthly chapter meetings for one year in order to allow you to network with other environmental professionals.  To take advantage of this offer, you will need to let a board member know of your employment situation prior the first chapter meeting you attend and you will be marked as "paid" on the attendance sheet.  You will not be asked for payment at the door of the chapter meeting.  It is imperative that you let a board member know beforehand however, as the representative collecting funds at the door will not be empowered to waive fees.  Please be aware that the board will periodically check on your employment status.

In exchange for the costs of membership and monthly meetings, the Chapter expects that the individuals receiving these benefits will take full advantage of the networking opportunities offered and become active participants in the Chapter by volunteering to assist with the Chapter's various functions and committees.

Networking Opportunities

As you know, the Chapter has monthly chapter lunch meetings which are designed to bring us together to socialize and network.  If you are receiving this email, you know that we also do our best to send updates on local and regional events, and to develop a sense of community by promoting available jobs and helping individuals find jobs.  We have also recently established a group called GFLC - A&WMA on the internet community Linked In.   You can post jobs, post resumes, have discussions, and post news on that group site.   This will hopefully spur better communication and networking among members.  Please let me know if you have any difficulty joining the group.

We are also in the process of designing a new internet site.  This will be a more interactive site which we hope will allow us to communicate with members more effectively.

Here are some tips on making the most of your networking experiences:

  • Stay focused on building relationships
  • Bring many business cards to hand out
  • Keep several copies of your resume handy
  • Say a person's name several times during the conversation to help you remember it
  • After a conversation, write a few facts about the person on the back of his or her business card which you can bring up again in a future conversation
  • Become involved in the organization (or volunteer with a charity) and put it on your resume-- it makes you more visible in the community and shows potential employers that you're making productive use of your time
